If you’re new to club volleyball, the lingo around age groups—like U13 or U16—can feel confusing. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!
What Do the Age Groups Mean?
Age groups are based on birthdays, not grade levels.
U13 = players who turn 13 before July 1 of the upcoming season.
U14 = players turning 14 before July 1.
And so on up through U18.
This system is set by USA Volleyball to create fair competition and help athletes grow at a pace that’s right for them.
Why It’s More Than Just Age
When building teams, coaches don’t look at age alone. Skill level and readiness are equally important. For example:
Two players the same age might belong on different teams if their skill development is at different stages.
Sometimes, younger athletes may “play up” with an older age group if their skills and maturity are ready for it.
