Playing Time, Roles, and the Bigger Picture

As we move through the heart of the season, one of the most common questions we hear—both from athletes and parents—is about playing time.

It’s a natural question. It’s also an important one.

But to really understand playing time, we have to zoom out and look at the bigger picture of athlete development, team dynamics, and long-term growth.

Every Athlete Has a Role

On any given team, every athlete plays a role.

Some roles are highly visible—on the court during key moments. Others are less visible but just as critical—pushing teammates in practice, bringing energy to the bench, or stepping in when the team needs it most.

What’s important to understand is this:

Roles are not fixed.

They evolve.

Athletes grow physically, mentally, and emotionally over the course of a season—and across multiple seasons. The player who is developing this month may be the one leading next season.

Development Isn’t Linear

Progress in volleyball (and in life) rarely happens in a straight line.

There are moments of rapid growth—and moments where things feel slower, harder, or even frustrating. That’s part of the process.

Playing time often reflects where an athlete is right now in their development, but it does not define their ceiling or their future.

At NPVC, we are always balancing two things:

  • Competing as a team

  • Developing each athlete for long-term success

Those two priorities don’t always look the same in every match—but both matter.

What Influences Opportunity

While playing time can vary, there are a few things that consistently influence opportunity over time:

1. Commitment

Showing up consistently—physically and mentally—matters. Athletes who are engaged, prepared, and invested in the process put themselves in a position to grow.

2. Effort

Effort is 100% within an athlete’s control. Hustle, focus, and intensity in practice translate into trust during competition.

3. Coachability

This is one of the most important—and most overlooked—traits.

Athletes who listen, apply feedback, and stay open to learning tend to improve faster and earn increased opportunities over time.

Trusting the Process

We know it can be hard when playing time doesn’t match expectations. That’s real—and we don’t dismiss it.

But growth happens when athletes:

  • Stay engaged even when it’s tough

  • Support their teammates

  • Keep working on their craft

  • Respond positively to coaching

These are the moments that build resilience, confidence, and character.

The Bigger Picture

At the end of the day, our goal is bigger than any single match or rotation.

We are here to help athletes:

  • Develop their skills

  • Understand team dynamics

  • Learn how to handle adversity

  • Build confidence that lasts beyond volleyball

Playing time is one piece of the journey—but it’s not the whole story.

Our commitment to you: We will continue to coach, develop, and support every athlete in our gym.

Our ask in return: Trust the process. Stay committed. Keep showing up.

Because over time, those things make the biggest difference.
